Big Banana Kayaking

Sea of Cortez, Loreto, Baja California.

*  Loreto is on the eastern coast of the Baja peninsula and is surrounded by the Sierra Giganta (mountains of the giants), one of the most rugged and spectacular parts of the peninsula. Visit the nearby islands of Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, and Monserrate hosting sea lion colonies and white sandy beaches.    Most  tours begin  just south of Loreto in an area dotted with pristine beaches, colorful cliffs and dramatic desert islands.  We load equipment, food and water into our sleek fiberglass sea kayaks and slip away to explore the remote areas most tourists never see. Unique and exciting, your guides will introduce you to the area's natural history as well as teach basic skills such as risk management and low-impact camping used in Baja-style touring. Our trips are planned to satisfy both active adventurers and those looking for a relaxing vacation.

Note: As everywhere in the outdoors, weather conditions might alter a trip itinerary.

    * Camping.

Baja's desert environment requires a few changes from what we are used to at home. Weather conditions and group progress ultimately dictates where we camp.  Fishing can be good (and fun) although licenses must be bought ahead of time in Loreto. Seafood can sometimes be purchased from locals out on the water. It is best to bring American dollars or US traveler’s cheques in small denominations ($20). US cash is accepted just about everywhere in Baja. Credit cards are not. There are some bank machines in Loreto, and these ATM's will give you pesos which is the most useful currency to work with when you are ‘out n’ about’ in Loreto.

*  Just to let you know...
In the event of an emergency, the closest operating room is a 5-hour drive away, in La Paz. Loreto has a 24-hour medical clinic without operating facilities. It takes cash only. We cannot cover the costs of an evacuation, so medical must be acquired in your own province or state (in British Columbia, ICBC has a very good rate, or try Blue Cross Travel 604-737-5528). If you have not had a tetanus shot in the past ten years, even a small cut could force your evacuation, so a current tetanus booster is strongly recommended.

       *  SOME ACCOMMODATION CHOICES:

* CAMPING:
LORETO SHORES RV PARK is a nice place to camp on the sea, with hot showers.
ph (613) 135-0629

Camping at El Morro RV or Los Peregrinos RV  both have showers and both RV's parks are in the center of town. You don’t need to make reservations at any of these sites. RV’s will out-number campers at all these campsites.

     * HOTELS:

If you are staying in a hotel before or after your trip, please store your extra gear there. If you are camping only, we'll store your knapsack etc in our limited storage space. One in forty people lose their luggage coming into Loreto. If you are unfortunate enough to experience this, let Alaska Airlines or Aero Mexico (or any charter line you are flying with) know where you are staying. If departing on a trip the next day, discuss your situation with our guides.
